A Beautiful Beginning

Married on Maui!

Aloha, Here is a sample of wedding vows that you may consider as you decide upon a minister. I strongly believe that a couple's wedding ceremony is the most sacred public acknowledgement of love and commitment that two people ever make to each other. It is also an incredibly special personal experience that deserves to be unique. The sample provided here is the general format I use for conducting the ceremony. It may well vary slightly, depending upon the wishes of the couple, and can include different passages of scripture or poetry as well.

Occasionally the bride and groom may choose to exchange flower leis as well as rings, (especially in a renewal of vows). I am always glad to consult with the bride and groom in order to insure that the ceremony and vows are a personal reflection of their unique love and commitment.

GREETING

We come together today in the spirit of love, the spirit we know in the islands as the spirit of Aloha. We acknowledge that love comes from God, and in fact that God is love. And we rejoice and give thanks for this love that has brought you (groom) and (bride) together.

EXCHANGE OF LEIS (optional)

Here in the islands we exchange flower leis as a symbol of giving our love to one another. As you give the carefully hand woven flowers (maile or ti) it is an outward expression of your inner commitment, that you now freely and completely give your love and your life. As you receive the lei from the one who gives it, it is a symbol that your heart is open to fully and forever receive their live, and their love.
We turn to these symbols now as your individual lives (groom) and (bride) are being woven together into one life. And now, with loving aloha, please present your leis to one another.

READING

This is the definition of love, which Paul describes as "the most excellent way". Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. So faith, hope, love, abide these three, but the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7,13

DECLARATION OF INTENTION

Marriage is a relationship that has its origin in the creative plan of a loving God.
"But at the beginning of creation God made them male and female."
It is the supreme human relationship.
"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."
Marriage is a unique relationship of oneness.
"So they are no longer two, but one.
" We are gathered together today, in front of God and these witnesses, to acknowledge God's plan and to ask his blessing on this union between (groom) and (bride) who now pledge their supreme devotion to each other.

EXCHANGE OF VOWS

The ring is a symbol of marriage in two ways. The purity of the metal is a reminder of the purtiy of your love for each other. The circle represents the undending and unbreakable bond that you make to each other. Prayer of Blessing
Let us pray.
Father, bless (groom) and (bride) forever with your manifest and abiding presence. Guard their marriage by the power of your Holy Spirirt, and guide them as they live together as one, from this day forward. In Jesus' name. Amen.

(Groom), marriage means that a man will love, respect and cherish his wife. That he will make his wife the closest companion of his life. That he will reserve his intimate associations for her alone. That he will give his strength and wisdom to the support of his wife and family. Do you now commit yourself wholeheartedly in this way? If so, say, "I do". (bride), marriage involves a woman in the same kind of commitment. A commitment of companionship, respect, love and mutual support. A commitment, which makes it clear that it is her husband who will be her dearest and closest friend. Do you now commit yourself wholeheatedly in this way? If so, say, "I do".

(Bride), as you place this ring on (groom's) finger, repeat after me. (groom), I give you this ring, as a sign of my love, and with all that I am, and all that I have, I honor you.

MARRIAGE BLESSING

(groom) and (bride) you are now united as husband and wife. Go forth as one. May God bless you and keep you all the days of your life. Have faith in God. Have faith in each other. And may His Spirit, which gives life, and love, fill your marriage with blessings overflowing, so as long as you both shall live.

PRONOUNCEMENT

Now by the power vested in me by almighty God, and according to the laws of the State of Hawaii, it is my pleasure and honor to pronounce you husband and wife. Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you Mr. and Mrs. (groom) and (bride) (last name). You may seal your vows with a kiss.
